Equifax Security Breach: How to Protect Yourself

The consumer credit reporting agency Equifax has reported a breach that may affect up to 143 million customers. You can read more about it in this article. Equifax has provided information to help protect yourself from being impacted by this breach. In addition, CFCU has gathered some additional information below to help.

Equifax will send direct mail notices to consumers whose credit card numbers or dispute documents with personal identifying information were impacted.

Equifax has established a dedicated website, www.equifaxsecurity2017.com, to help consumers determine if their information has been potentially impacted and to sign up for credit file monitoring and identify theft protection-all complimentary, or free, to US consumers for one year. Consumers can take the following steps to protect their personal information:

Step 1. Freeze credit-restrict who can see your credit report, preventing lenders and others who aren’t familiar with from accessing your information. To do this call one of the three major credit bureaus: Experian (888-397-3742), Transunion (888-909-8872) and Equifax (888-909-8872).

Step 2. Activate Fraud Alerts - You are allowed to activate a free 90-day fraud alert with one of three credit bureaus, which makes it harder for identity thieves to steal your information. Please visit the Federal Trade Commission website at http://www.consumer.ftc.gov.

Step 3. Check your credit report-https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action
If you have any additional questions, visit www.equifaxsecurity2017.com. In addition, Equifax has a dedicated call center at 866-447-7559 set up to assist consumers. The call center is open daily from 6:00 a.m.-12:00 a.m.

CFCU also has resources to help monitor and protect your account information:
